West Wales ECO Centre Silver Jubilee

The staff and Trustees of the West Wales ECO Centre are pleased to announce a week of events celebrating our 25th anniversary.

Climate Change and Global Warming are now mainstream issues reported on daily and high up the political agenda.  Exhibitions, displays and presentations will demonstrate what we have been doing over the last quarter of a century to save energy and minimise the impact of climate change both locally and across Wales.

Events and open days taking place in and around the ECO Centre during the Silver Jubilee Week of May 16th - May 21st. 

MON 16TH MAY.  LAUNCH OF SILVER JUBILEE WEEK
11.00 a.m. Exhibition and open day including the premiere of "CLIMATE CHANGE - HAVE YOUR SAY" A video diary of local people's opinions.

TUES 17TH MAY.  CLIMATE CHANGE AWARENESS DAY
Newport Memorial Hall.
12.00 p.m. - 6.00 p.m. Exhibition of energy saving initiatives and products
7.00 p.m. - 8.00 p.m. Lecture by Sir John Houghton 'Global Warming - the science, the politics, the impacts'.

WED 18TH MAY.  EDUCATION AND OUTREACH DAY
10.00 a.m. - 4.00 p.m. Visits to schools with Mobile Exhibition Unit.  Display of Education projects past and present; demonstration of educational resources. Meet the staff

THURS 19TH MAY.  ENERGY EFFICIENCY OPEN AFTERNOON
2.00 p.m. - 5.00 p.m. EEAC is open to guests
2.00 p.m. - 3.00 p.m. afternoon tea being served
3.00 p.m. - 4.00 p.m. 'Meet the EEAC' presentation

FRIDAY 20TH MAY.  RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECTS DAY
11.00 a.m. Exhibition and presentations on ECO Centre projects past and present.
2.30 p.m. Study tour of renewable energy installations (subject to numbers).

SATURDAY 21ST MAY.  ECO CENTRE OPEN DAY
10.00 a.m. -  4.00 p.m. Eco Centre open and staff available. Exhibitions and 'Meet the Experts' -installers and professionals who work in the renewable energy sector.

Sir John Houghton -
After a career at Oxford University, leading to Professor of Atmospherics Physics, Sir John Houghton became Director of the Appleton Laboratory in the UK in 1979 and Director General (later Chief Executive) of the UK Meteorological Office in 1983. In 1988 on the formation of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, he became Chairman (later co-Chairman) of its Scientific Assessment Working Group, a position he still holds. On his retirement from the Meteorological Office in 1991, he became Chairman of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution in the UK. Sir John is the author of a number of books including two textbooks, The Physics of Atmospheres (Cambridge University Press, 2nd edition, 1986) and Global Warming - the complete briefing, Lion Publishing, 1994, 2nd edition, Cambridge University Press, 1997
