Eco Centre Wales is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee.

It was established in 1980 as the Newport and Nevern Energy Group. It comprised a local group of volunteers who wanted to campaign positively on the issues of energy saving, renewable energy generation, increasing reliance on fossil fuels and its contribution to acid rain and global warming, the move to nuclear power and the increasing risk fuel poverty in the local population as a result of very high fuel prices.

Its remit was and still is the promotion of the issues surrounding energy use and the environment, encapsulated by its charitable objectives:

  1. the advancement of public education in all aspects of energy conservation and energy use;
  2. the relief of fuel poverty in the local population;
  3. the advancement of public education in matters relating to the environment, insofar as they relate to energy conservation and energy use.

Primarily Eco Centre Wales seeks to reduce society’s impact on the environment, in particular its contribution to global warming and unnecessary climate change. This is only possible by taking steps to reduce  demand on the environment, due to  energy use, and making changes to the way society lives so that it reduces its reliance on fossil fuel based energy.

It meets these objectives in a number of ways and by working with a variety of partners and stakeholders and a wide audience.
The four main planks of Eco Centre Wales’s work are:
  • energy efficiency
  • renewable energy
  • environmental education – climate change and sustainability
  • fuel poverty

In each of these areas the organisation works with government, statutory authorities, schools, communities and other third sector bodies to deliver its objectives. The audience for this work ranges from school-age children, teachers, householders, community groups, planners, housing officers and other local authority staff, installers, utility companies, health boards and government.

  • Pioneering energy saving schemes
  • Independent energy advice service
  • Delivering the Energy Saving Trust advice service from 1993 - 2009
  • Renewable energy schemes and projects, working with communities and householders including advice, site visits, feasibility, project design and development and funding advice
  • Education programmes that work within the school to promote climate change and sustainability
  • Education programmes that develop materials and resources for children and teachers
